Steeped in a vast history of shipbuilding, mining, rail and links to German settlers, our village welcomes you with warmth and small town hospitality. Originally settled by Acadians as Blanchard's Village, it was renamed for Lord Hillsborough after the Acadian settlers moved up river. Today you can still see the dykes built by the Acadians along our salt water marshes. A walk through the Wetlands Park will take you to the edge of the Petitcodiac River, named by the Micmac Indians meaning "river that bends like a bow" From the observation deck, you can view the glistening mud flats, which is where the river gets its' nickname "Chocolate River" for the brown colour created from the clay base. If your timing is right, you can see the Tidal Bore from the deck, pulling in the tides from the Bay of Fundy to fill the River to capacity.
Historic homes abound in the village, many dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Built by sea captains, mine owners, shipbuilders, bankers and other professionals, our heritage homes stop visitors in their tracks to snap a photo or two. Artisan studios for pottery, stained glass, oil and sculpture offer one of a kind gifts to take home. Beautiful gift shops and retail clothing in historic properties will make your shopping even more memorable.
An excursion and tour of the Salem & Hillsborough Railroad and Museum is a true "trip into the past". The museum contains the most complete collection of railway memorabilia east of Montreal. Excursions and the famous Dinner trains are a treat for the whole family.
The William Henry Steeves House Museum is in the heart of the village and no stay here is complete without a tour of this charming Colonial home, circa 1814 and expanded in 1850. The former home and birthplace of Wm. Henry Steeves, a former Canadian Father of Confederation and Senator. The historic "Grapevine Quilt" is registered in the nation's capital as a historic textile because of the vivid colours from the dyes.
Golfing at Burro Hills Golf Club is a challenge to the senses as well as your skills. Current golf weather report online. Carved out of the natural landscape and former gypsum quarry lands, our 18 hole course offers you peaceful serenity as well as a great test for your handicap.
Although an historic village you will find today's needs at our Bank, Pharmacy, Post Office and Visitor Information Center to name a few! Book a kayaking or caving tour at the Visitor Information Center at the Wetlands Park and you visit the second floor interpretive center.
Take in a game of tennis or a dip at the Community Pool. A  short drive south will take you to Albert Mines where you find more artisan studios
plus abandoned mine sites that date back to the 1800's. Our area was known around the world for deposits and mining of oil, shale, manganese, gypsum  and most of all for the discovery of the albertite, a black and glossy hydrocarbon.
Take a tour on our ATV Trails for an outdoor adventure on the many trails that will lead you through the county.
Travel north on Route 114 through Weldon, Stoney Creek and Lower Coverdale to the Town of Riverview with many shops, attractions and services.
